Heat Pumps

Heat Pumps are essentially super-efficient boilers, and use advanced technology to amplify heat collected from the air or under the ground to supply space heating and hot water. In Scandinavian countries they have all but replaced conventional boilers, and the UK is predicted to follow suit. Heat Pumps can heat both under-floor and radiator heating systems.

A heat pump works by taking low temperature from the air or ground which is then transferred to a refrigerant (1). The refrigerant turns from liquid to gas (2). The gas is then compressed so that its temperature increases dramatically. This heat is then extracted and used to heat water in central heating radiators, under-floor heating or hot water cylinders (3). The cycle then continues (4).

A Heat Pump will generate up to 5kW of heat for every 1kW spent running the unit. This compares to a maximum of 0.9kW of heat generated by a boiler for every 1kW spent running it. When viewed in this way it is easy to see the incredible fuel-bill savings that can be achieved with a Heat Pump, even more-so if you are using expensive fuels like Oil or LPG.

Ground-Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) extract temperature from the ground, either from a large 'loop' installed out from the property 1 meter below the surface, or from vertical bore-holes which can be 100 meters deep.

GSHP's are more efficient than Air-Source Heat Pumps, as they extract a constant year-round temperature from the ground. They are most popular on farms or on New build projects, where plant is on site and able to carry out the ground-works.

Our GSHP's have a COP (Coefficient of Performance) of up to 5, meaning that you get up to 5kW of heat for every 1kW you spend running the Heat Pump.

Air-Source Heat-Pumps (ASHP) extract temperature from the air. This can be hard to comprehend, especially in winter. Although we consider freezing to be 0oC, absolute freezing is -273oC, so even at -20oC (the lowest operating temperature of an ASHP) there is still plenty of energy that can be extracted from the air.

ASHP efficiency is now close to that of GSHP's, and they are much cheaper to install as they do not require ground-works or drilling rigs. In addition, ASHP's are the logical choice for well insulated existing dwellings as there is no garden disruption.

Our ASHP's have a COP (Coefficient of Performance) of up to 4.1, meaning that you get up to 4.1kW of heat for every 1kW you spend running the Heat Pump.

Our Heat-Pumps are made by Europe's leading manufacturers and are selected by us for their 'best-in-class' performance, ease of use, low maintenance and the track record of the manufacturer. In turn, we have achieved Approved Installer status for every range of units we install.

We install both domestic and commercial GSHP's and ASHP's, and can advise you of the most viable option for your property or site. We can provide a full installation service including ground-works excavation /drilling.
